Best Time to Visit Galle Fort
One of the most important things to know before visiting Galle Fort is that the middle of the afternoon can be extremely hot.
The Fort is best explored on foot, but many streets and sections of the ramparts have very little shade.
Walking around between approximately 12 PM and 3 PM on a sunny day can therefore become uncomfortable.
Visit Galle Fort in the Evening
Our favourite time to visit is from around 4 PM onwards.
Start by exploring the streets and shops, stop at one of the cafés for coffee or something to eat, and then head towards the ramparts as sunset approaches.
Sunset is easily one of the best times to experience Galle Fort.
You’ll see locals and travellers gathering along the walls, people walking around the lighthouse and ramparts, and cafés and restaurants becoming much more lively.
After sunset, you can stay inside the Fort for dinner or drinks.
A simple evening itinerary could be:
4:00 PM – Arrive at Galle Fort
Walk around Pedlar Street and explore the shops.
4:30–5:30 PM – Café stop
Try The Merchant, Pedlar’s Inn, Pedlar’s Corner or Coffee Brunch.
